How guna milan works: the 8 kootas and 36 gunas
Traditional matching (Ashtakoot) scores 8 areas based mainly on the two Moon signs and nakshatras. Together they add up to 36 gunas:

What is a good guna milan score?
Traditionally, 18 or more out of 36 is considered acceptable for marriage, 24 to 32 is good, and above 32 is very good. But the score is guidance, not a final verdict. Many astrologers also check Mangal dosh, the strength of the 7th house, and whether doshas are cancelled.
Mutual understanding, values and family support matter a lot. A lower score does not mean a marriage will fail, and a high score does not guarantee happiness.
Nadi dosh and Bhakoot dosh
Nadi dosh appears when both partners have the same nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya), and Bhakoot dosh depends on how the two Moon signs sit relative to each other. Both have well-known cancellation rules, for example when the rashi lords are friends or the nakshatras differ in certain ways.
